Rawalpindi:

The trip to Rawalpindi district prison – now Adiala central prison – has finished 142 years, marking an important chapter in its history. Over the years, Rawalpindi’s central prison has moved four times.

Initially, when Rawalpindi was a small town, the prison was located at the Chowk committee, Teli Mohalla Road, near Triangle Road. After a brief period, he went to the current secretariat of education. In 1882, the prison was established in its current location near Jinnah Park and the legal complex, covering 84.4 acres, where it remained for 104 years.

This historic prison held many fighters from the freedom of the independence movement, which were brought here from cities like Lahore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indian Punjab, Dhaka and Chittagong by the British. The former adjacent adjacent cemetery contains the graves of these freedom fighters.

In particular, Allama Mashriqi was also imprisoned here. Meanwhile, prisoners were escorted in court on foot because there were no police vehicles for legal transport. From now on, due to the distance from the prison, 12 vehicles and five special vans are used, costing millions of monthly fuel expenses.

The founder of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was also imprisoned and executed on April 4, 1979. After his execution, General Ziaul Haq decided to erase the historical meaning of the prison by building a new one. In 1988, the former prison was demolished and part of the field was converted into a housing company, while a police training college was created.

After PPP demonstrations, Jinnah Park was built on part of the land. The legal complex was then built on the site of the police college, and the new central prison in Rawalpindi was established near the village of Adiala, about 13 km from the courts of Rawalpindi.

Adiala prison has acquired global recognition when Prince Charles of the United Kingdom (United Kingdom) visited it, where the British national Mirza Tahir, condemned in a murder case, awaited execution. During this visit, President Pervez Musharraf committed his death sentence to life imprisonment and later returned it to the United Kingdom. The prison became international again after the execution of Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of the governor of Punjab Salman Taseer, and during the trial of the eight suspects involved in the attacks of Mumbai in 2008.

Adiala prison, completed in 1986, extends over 100 acres and initially welcomed 1,927 prisoners. This capacity was extended to 2,700 and later to 3,500 in the third phase.

Currently, the prison holds more than 6,000 prisoners, the fluctuating number from 200 to 300. It is considered Abbasi, the chief minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Zardari, model Ayan Ali, and more.

Today, he is especially famous for sheltering the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-E-insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The prison is equipped with separate districts for women, children and VIPs, as well as three chambers of execution, a mosque, a church, an imambarga, a library, a computer center, a sewing center, a factory, agricultural land and sports grounds.

The former assistant superintendent (DS) of Adiala prison, Chaudhry Ayub, emphasizes the high security of the establishment, noting the need for Islamabad prison to be completed quickly for easier management. According to Ajab Gul, a former prisoner, the bribes guarantee the availability of all types of food and prohibited drinks, prices being the doubles of those on the market. If you have money, even mobile phone contact is easily organized.

Since the detention of the PTI founder, the prison security system has been tightened, with in -depth cellular controls and rigorous procedures.
