A Brazilian judge placed former president Jair Bolsonaro at the residual residence for having broken a ban on social media, degenerating a spectacular confrontation between the court and the politician, accused of having plotted a coup.
Bolsonaro is tried at the Supreme Court for having allegedly plotting power after losing 2022 elections to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
President Donald Trump sought to punish Brazil, a long-standing ally of the United States, for what he considers a “witch hunt” motivated by a political motivation targeting Bolsonaro by imposing attractive prices on the greatest economy in Latin America.
The 70 -year -old Bolsonaro is prohibited from social media during the duration of the procedure, and third parties are prohibited from sharing its public remarks.
But Sunday, his allies challenged order by sharing online images of an appeal between the former army captain and his eldest son Flavio during a rally of solidarity in Rio de Janeiro.
Judge of the Supreme Court Alexander of Moraes reacted furiously, declaring that the judiciary would not allow a defendant to “treat him as a fool” because of his “political and economic power”.
Criticizing the “non-compliance” of Bolsonaro to comply with the restrictions of the Court during the trial, he placed him under house arrest at his home in the capital Brasilia.
He also prohibited the former head of the country (2019-2022) from receiving visitors, outside of his lawyers and using mobile phones, and warned that any new transgression would lead to his detention.
Several mobile phones were seized at home on Monday, police announced.
Washington condemned the new restrictions on Monday evening, the western hemisphere office of the State Department publishing a declaration on X.
“Minister Alexandre de Moraes, already sanctioned by the United States for human rights violations, continues to use Brazilian institutions to silence the opposition and threaten democracy,” said the office. “Let Bolsonaro talk!”
US officials added that they “would hold responsible for all those who collaborate with or facilitate sanctioned driving”.
The American post was recommended by Bolsonaro’s politician, son Eduardo Bolsonaro, who had managed to put Washington to take punitive measures against Brazil during the case.
In a separate article, he wrote: “Brazil is no longer a democracy”.
He called Moraes, who chairs the Bolsonaro trial and was stylized a defender of Brazilian democracy in the face of the far right, an “uncontrollable psychopath”.
Last month, Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to wear an ankle bracelet and instituted the ban on social media.
Trump responded in an unprecedented manner by prohibiting Moraes from the United States and freeing his assets in American banks.
Trump pressure campaign
Trump’s pressure campaign has angry many Brazilians, but pleased it at the conservative base of Bolsonaro.
On Sunday, during the rallies in Rio, Brasilia and Sao Paulo, some demonstrators signaled American flags or held signs while reading “Thank you Trump”.
Bolsonaro himself did not attend the rallies, having received the order of the Supreme Court to stay at home at night and the weekend throughout the trial.
The prosecutors say that he and seven co-accused tried to overthrow his electoral defeat in 2022 in a plot that only failed because the soldiers did not go on board.
He has a 40 -year sentence if he was sentenced during the trial, which should end in the coming weeks.
Bolsonaro supporters stormed the Brazil congress in January 2023, after the inauguration of Lula, ransacking the rooms and attacking the police, in scenes reminiscent of a Trump supporters on the American Capitol two years ago.
Although he was excluded to run, Bolsonaro hopes to set up a Trump style return during the Brazil’s presidential election in 2026.
Lula, 79, said he could request a fourth term, allowing health.
Last year, he was hospitalized for a brain hemorrhage caused by a bathroom fall.
