Karachi:

It was like striking gold when a company prospecting for fresh water complicated a reserve of gas.

TPL Properties reported the discovery of a gas pocket while drilling a test well for the exploration of water in Korangi Creek.

At the end of opinion submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the company said that preliminary technical assessments, as well as independent assessments of industry experts, suggest that gas is probably a low biogenic methane – naturally produced by the decomposition of organic matter.

As the location is not part of a recognized natural gas tank, the company noted that the gas pocket should dissipate naturally over time if the fire is authorized to burn. The discovery was made as part of a series of in -depth studies carried out in collaboration with the main national and international consulting firms. These studies included geotechnical analyzes, assessments of the structure of the soil and contamination, electrical resistivity surveys (ER), a complete evaluation of the environmental and social impact (ESIA) and other basic assessments.

After the incident on the night of Friday March 28, 2025, TPL Properties took all the measures necessary to manage the situation and informed the stakeholders concerned accordingly.

Large reserves in Korangi Creek

Earlier, a geologist speaking at L’Express PK Press Club had expressed the possibility of large reserves of underground gas in the Korangi Creek region, urging the need to turn off the fire that has been burning for five days and launching gas exploration activities on the site.

The associate professor of the Geology Department of the University of Karachi, Dr. Adnan Khan, told L’Express PK Press Club that the 56 -year -old data of the drilled well in the Indta region for oil and gas exploration, indicate the potential presence of methane gas on the site where boring water has led to the gas emission. He added that there is also a possibility of coal deposits on the site.
