Rawalpindi:

Islamabad’s long -awaited model prison should be operational in three phases, the first phase that should start by the end of August.

The second phase will end within 90 days by October 31, while the final phase is expected to be completed by December 31, 2025. Once the first phase was completed, between 200 and 300 detainees will be transferred from the Adiala prison in Rawalpindi to the new model prison in Islamabad. Among them is probably the former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned in Adiala prison for two years.

The Islamabad model prison is under construction on 90 acres in sector H-16/2 of the federal capital. Initially estimated at RS3.9 billion, the cost of the project has now reached more than 18.2 billion rupees due to persistent delays and a significant increase in building materials.

Designed to house 2,000 prisoners and prisoners from Sousseai, the establishment includes a large separate barracks for women and juvenile prisoners. The prison also includes a school for staff of the staff, a 22 -bed hospital for detainees and staff, a mosque, an imambargah, a church, a library and an auditorium.

A large kitchen capable of preparing meals for 2,000 to 3,000 people has also been equipped with roti machines. The area covered with the installation increased from 869,621 to 914,329 square feet.
Although the project was initially proposed in 2007, the construction started only after the allocation of funds in the 2016-2017 budget.

Initially planned as a 36 -month project to be completed in 2019, it was blocked due to financing discounts. The work has resumed a faster rate from July 1 of this year. Two regular barracks and a special barracks have been completed, as well as the security control posts and the central Watchtower, which are currently being finished which should end in a week.

To make the installation functional, the Ministry of the Interior requested 288 police officers, including 8 inspectors, 5 assistant sub-games, 25 head agents and 250 police officers. These officers should be given to the administration of Islamabad prison before August 14.

The appointment of the prison’s first superintendent, assistant superintendent and assistant superintendent is also expected in mid-August. Although the model prison will help facilitate the overcrowding of Adiala prison, it will not fully solve the problem. Adiala prison has a capacity of 3,500, but currently shelters up to 7,500 prisoners and prisoners from Sousseai. Even if 2,000 is moved, the installation is likely to fill up quickly.

The preparations for the launch of the pilot phase are in full swing, the daily progression reports being subject to the Ministry of the Interior. Several departments work 24 hours a day to meet deadlines. Special vans of new prisons are also provided and the recruitment process for doctors and hospital staff should start the first week of August.

Islamabad became a capital fully functional in 1967. After a wait of 58 years, his first prison should now be activated in 2025.
