Dera Ismail Khan:
Former senator Abbas Afridi died of injuries suffered in an explosion suspected of gas flight at his residence in the Azim Bagh region of Kohat, family sources confirmed to L’Express PK Press Club.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, leaving Afrida and three others injured critically. Initially treated at the combined military hospital (CMH) in Kohat, Afridi was then transferred to the Kharian Burn Center for specialized care. Despite medical efforts, he died of his injuries.
Abbas Afridi was a senior official of the Pakistani-Nawaz Muslim League (PML-N) and belonged to an eminent political family.
He was the brother of the former provincial information minister of the Pakistani peoples (PPP) Party Amjad Afridi and the son of Senator Shamim Afridi.
In a separate but politically entangled development on Thursday, five suspects were arrested as part of the assassination of the former Nazim Kohat Malik Asad Khan district, including Malik Amjad Afridi – the brother of the late Abbas Afridi.
At a press conference held at the Kohat Police Club, the district police officer (DPO), Dr. Zahidullah Khan, revealed that the murder plot was orchestrated at the Malik Amjad Afridi residence.
The suspects in detention include Afridi, its nephew Hussain Afridi and three other people identified as Hashim alias Sheno Gulzeb, Nemat Amir and Yasir.
According to police, Nemat Amir was apprehended in Islamabad who provided key information during the interrogation, which led to the arrest of other suspects.
The law enforcement officials also reported the recovery of weapons from all the accused.
The suspects are currently in police custody – Afridi in pre -trial detention of five days, and the others for seven days – as the investigations continue.
The authorities allege that Avid and his nephew have hosted the attackers and facilitated their escape.
