The Gilgit-Baltistan Government (GB) said 37 locations affected by floods under the name of calamity areas and imposed an emergency to manage the crisis, officials announced on Thursday.
According to a notification issued by the original service of the region, the affected areas include 12 sites in Diamer, new in Gilgit, four each in Skardu and Shigar, five in Ghizer, two in Ghanche and each in Nagar and Kharmang. “The urgency has been applied in all these areas,” said the notification.
Faizullah Firaq, spokesperson for the GB government, said the floods had caused an estimated loss of 20 billion rupees. At least 10 people died, most of them and four others were injured and provided medical aid.
“Between 10 to 15 tourists are still missing and research operations are underway,” said Firaq, adding that 22 vehicles were swept away in the floods.
He said the government had started rehabilitation efforts using its own resources, launching 440 million rupees of water supply, electricity supply and repair of connection roads.
Rescue supplies, including tents, blankets, food and kitchen sets, have already been distributed among the affected population, he added.
“The restoration of 509 destroyed houses remains a major challenge,” said the spokesperson. “We hope that the Prime Minister of Pakistan will extend support and help heal the injuries of the victims.”
The region, known for its natural beauty and tourism, has increased in the climate -related disasters in recent years, sudden floods and explosions of glacial lakes are becoming more and more common.
