- Google Pixel 10 battery started smoking during durability test
- Phone also broke on weak antenna line
- And it failed to demonstrate its supposed dust resistance
The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is – among other things – sold for its durability. It’s the first foldable with an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, and Google says it can survive up to ten years of folding. But despite these supposed merits, the 10 Pro Fold just performed extremely poorly in a durability test.
JerryRigEverything put the Pixel 10 Pro Fold through its usual battery of tests, and in the process of folding the phone, it broke along one of its antenna lines. But even worse, upon righting the phone, the battery started smoking so much that it even set off a smoke detector.
In a decade of testing almost every consumer phone, this is the first time a handset has gone up in smoke for JerryRigEverything, and while they didn’t expect this to happen, they also weren’t surprised that it broke along the antenna line, as the previous two foldable Pixels had the same weakness – one that Google apparently did nothing to address.
Look on it
One of the worst results ever
JerryRigEverything described this result as a “catastrophic failure”, comparing the weak antenna line to “building a third Death Star with the exact same exhaust port”.
But while the broken screen and smoking battery are the biggest flaws here, they’re not the only ones, with the YouTuber also finding that, despite Google’s IP68 claims, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s hinge can get sand in it, leading them to believe that only the screen is actually dust-proof (as something with an IP68 rating should be).
Of course, JerryRigEverything’s extensive testing doesn’t necessarily reflect the demands of everyday use, but if you’re considering buying the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold based on any sort of durability credentials, you should be very careful not to bend it too much when unfolded.
