The hardano hard fork is put online, inaugurating chain governance

Cardano, the layer 1 blockchain launched in 2017 by the co-founder of Ethereum, Charles Hoskinson, activated its long-awaited upgrade of “Plomin” on Wednesday, inaugurating the long-awaited movement of the ecosystem to a system of decentralized governance.

With the upgrade of Plomin Now Live, Ada tokens holders will be able to shape the future of Cardano, including the vote on treasury measures and hard forks.

Plomin comes only four months after Cardano implemented the hard fork “Chang”, which set up many mechanisms that entered into force on Wednesday. (Hard forks are major updates made to a chain that makes the old versions of this blockchain as obsolete).

The biggest change in Cardano with Plomin is the complete implementation of representatives of the delegates (DREPS), who will vote on governance issues on behalf of Ada token holders. Previously, the three founding entities of Cardano – Cardano Foundation, Global Entrance (IOHK) and Emurgo – were in charge of governance changes and chain upgrades. In the future, the keys they have held and these responsibilities are delegated to new Cardano governance groups.

Before Plomin, apple pool operators had to upgrade their nodes and approve the upgrade with a 51%vote. Since this week, around 85% of the nodes were with the new version, allowing the network to make the changes.

As for the rest with Cardano, the community is already attacking a series of new problems to implement. “In short, we want to make Cardano faster, we want to add confidentiality preservation features and we want to add more utility for developers,” said Giorgio Zinetti, CTO of the Cardano Foundation, in an interview with Coindesk . “Development will therefore be what the community wants.”
