A butt player at the Ohio high school died this week at the age of 16 after a bizarre accident during a match.

Dylan Veselic, a second year student at the Bay Village High School, died Thursday after taking a ball at the head two days earlier.

Veneically was injured after an opponent shot hit the back of his head under his helmet. He underwent surgery on Wednesday, but it was not enough.

“We are deeply affected by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond. We ask you to continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult period,” the family said in a statement.

“Dylan was a dedicated student and athlete, and we have a heart broken by this loss,” said the Superintendent of schools in the village of Bay, Scot Prebles in a press release, via Cleveland.com. “The consulting services are available at Bay High School for students, staff and family who need support.”
