All iPhone launches are complete for this year, which means we can turn our attention to 2026 and the iPhone 18 – and the latest rumor to surface suggests that this could be the handset when Apple finally decides to add an under-screen selfie camera.
According to popular tipster Smart Pikachu (via Wccftech), Apple is at least testing under-screen camera technology for iPhone 18 handsets, which would mean the screen notch could shrink or disappear altogether.
If you think this sounds familiar, it might be because it’s been rumored to be coming to the iPhone for years now. Maybe 2026 will finally be the year this actually happens – although, of course, nothing is certain yet.
Other sources have also predicted that an under-screen Face ID camera will be on the table for iPhone 18 handsets, which adds more credibility to this latest leak. We’ve also heard rumors that Apple is slowly working towards an all-screen iPhone.
Apple won’t be the first
Other smartphone makers have been experimenting with under-display cameras for years. You may remember the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, launched in 2021, which came with an under-display camera on the main 7.6-inch display.
However, it’s worth noting that the camera wasn’t particularly good and Samsung has since discontinued this technology, at least for now. All Galaxy handsets launched in 2025 feature conventional selfie cameras, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Although Apple hasn’t always been first in industry innovations, it tends to implement new technologies in a better way than most or all of its competitors. Touch ID and Face ID would be two examples, and the foldable iPhone could well be another.
Well-placed sources have suggested that Apple could shake up its iPhone launch schedule next year, with the Pro models arriving in September and the standard iPhone 18 in March 2026. When these phones appear, keep an eye on the cameras.
