Call me a suction cup for nostalgia, but I wanted to get my hands for a long timest-Conious version of the Kodak Super 8. Now, I found something that is scratching that itch without demanding that I re-read my house: the Snap CS-8 camp.
Kodak relaunched the Super 8 last year, and it’s really something special. Supplied in a custom -lined pelican housing with a 6 mm detachable lens and an 8 mm films pack, the emblematic home camera taking in 2024 can run both an analog and digital video and is built according to inactible standards. The price asking for the eyes reflects this: it is $ 5,495 (approximately £ 4,350 / $ 8,450 in).
For those looking for a photo of nostalgia at a slightly more pleasant cost to taste, there is always the possibility of taking a super 8 good quality camera on the market used. Or you can just go cheap, modern and digital. Advance the Snap CS-8 camp, launching very soon.
If the name sounds a bell, it is because the Snap camp of the company based in Redondo Beach, California, is responsible for the tiny, distinctive and dynamic digital camera without screen of the same nickname. Embarking the retro attraction and available in a wide range of color finishes, this stripped 8mp Vivaneau is yours for only $ 69.95 / £ 53 / $ 110 (and it resides in our guide for the best cameras for children).
Obviously, the Snap camp does not work like a Fujifilm X100IV – and in fact it lacks the point of comparing it even that most of us could classify as “real” digital camera. But I think that its simplicity and “in the moment” does not make it perfect to document the weekend outings or give them to children who want to take their first steps in photography. The base is the point.
Press this trigger
The Snap CS-8 camp provides this same low-technology and high-level approach to a digital camcorder. Like the super 8 of the past based on the film, it has a pistol handle design – save when the user holds the trigger, stopping when it was released. A small electronic viewfinder is used, but only for live composition – there are no menus to go and no options to read camera recordings. The recording is rather stored on the SD card (a 4 GB card is available in the box) and can be discharged on your computer via USB-C (also used to recharge the battery).
The CS-8 is delivered with a selection of digital filters and the option of switching between four aspect ratios (1: 1, 9:16, 4: 3 or 16: 9) on the fly, allowing users to record ready-made clips for social media without the need for montage out of camera. All these elements are selected by twisting old -fashioned dials, while the lifespan and storage of the remaining battery can be followed by taking a look at the needle position on an analog counter. The only other control that you need to worry about is the buttons that zooms before and exit.
The price of all this retro magnificentness? Only $ 199 (which is currently converting to £ 147 /302 in), with pre -orders from July 31. This represents only 3.64% of the price of the new Super 8 in Kodak.
Camp Snap sent us a CS-8 to test, so look for a complete and in-depth review here very soon. Let us know in the comments if there is something in particular on which you would like us to focus when we take this old camcorder for a road test.
