The assembly of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) adopted a resolution condemning amendments to the Act on the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (PECA), said Express News.
The resolution declared that the modified law of Peca imposes restrictions on press freedom, which the KP assembly strongly rejects as a violation of freedom of expression and freedom of expression. The resolution was presented by Shafiullah Jan.
The resolution also expressed its solidarity towards the community of journalists, emphasizing a firm condemnation of the law. The KP assembly called on the federal government to revoke the undemocratic and controversial amendments to the PECA Act.
The federal government has moved to strengthen PECA with new amendments targeting false news and illegal online content.
The bill, entitled the 2025 law on the prevention of electronic crimes, proposed strict sanctions, including up to three years in prison and fines of RS2 million for the spread of disinformation.
The changes also describe the creation of a digital rights protection authority (DRPA), which will have radical powers to regulate social media and online platforms.
The organizations of journalists across Pakistan firmly opposed these modifications, expressing concerns about the lack of consultation and its implications for press freedom.
