Fermi America, a Texas company co-founded by the former secretary in the United States, Rick Perry, aims to build the largest energy and data complex of this type powered by nuclear, natural gas and solar, he said on Thursday.
Fermi plans to join the “Hypergrid” project with Texas Tech University and said that it would be launched on July 4.
Perry, who was also Governor of Texas, said that China built 22 nuclear reactors while the United States is building none.
“We are late – and everything is on the bridge. We have to do everything in our power to win this race, because it’s the race that really counts.”
The interest in the construction of new nuclear power plants increased after President Donald Trump published decrees last month which aim to accelerate requests for new reactors and revise the nuclear regulatory committee.
Nuclear criticisms and some supporters have criticized the overhaul as potentially harmful to industry and place policy before security and public health. Trump also dismissed the CNRC Democratic Commissioner Chris Hanson.
Fermi said that the Amarillo campus had the potential to deliver up to 11 gigawatts (GW) from new nuclear, gas and solar powers, about enough for more than 8.2 million houses, with 1 GW expected online at the end of 2026. He did not say how much the project would cost or how it is funded.
Fermi said that the project will be the largest American nuclear energy complex, but has not said when it was finished. US nuclear energy was afflicted by delays and cost exceeding, the last online reactor last year in Georgia.

The campus of almost 5,800 acres (2,347 hectares) will also have a capacity of large artificial intelligence data centers.
The site, near the Pantex nuclear nuclear weapon factory of the Ministry of Energy, “underlines Fermi’s strategic position to build a new clean nuclear power, safe for the new generation of America,” said Fermi.
The site is also located near some of the largest American gas pipelines and at the top of a large field of natural gas.
