- Further firmware testing for the triple pane is underway
- Model number indicates unlocked US variant
- We could see the phone revealed in full on December 5
It seems like a long, long time ago that Samsung gave us the first official look at its upcoming tri-fold phone – but in fact it was only January of this year. Now, a new leak suggests its launch is finally imminent, while also heavily hinting at its availability in the United States.
SamMobile has spotted that firmware testing for a Samsung phone with model number SM-F968U1 is currently underway. This number may not mean much to you, but if you know your Samsung, it indicates an unlocked model of a US variant.
This follows firmware testing of the SM-F968U model, which is said to be the carrier-locked version coming to the US soon. This is based on how Samsung has ordered its model numbers in the past.
The SamMobile team notes that this is a little later than expected for firmware testing, but it suggests that US Samsung fans will be able to purchase the handset. There was some debate about the availability of the telephone.
What we think we know so far
Since that first official tease back in January, there have been plenty of leaks about what we can expect from this foldable with an added fold. It will apparently fold inwards and have a separate outer screen, unlike the Huawei Mate XT.
Some advanced software multitasking capabilities are expected to take advantage of this extra-large screen, which is said to measure 10 inches from corner to corner when properly opened (as we saw during a brief official appearance).
Based on previous leaks, it appears that the phone will bring support for NFC payments, wireless charging, and reverse charging. We also believe it will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.
Other leaks have pointed to a large 5,600 mAh battery and a launch date of Friday, December 5. Since Samsung promised the phone would be released by the end of the year, it could arrive any time between now and 2026.
