While President Donald Trump produces one of the most focused on history, his recent executive order of “Saving College Sports” caused a strong response from the veteran sports agent Leigh Steinberg.

“They answered a need that was that the recruitment and transfer portal had become uncontrollable,” Steinberg told PK Press Club Digital.

The decree, which aims to regulate university sports affairs by providing restrictions on what the parties can pay from academic athletes and by obliging the preservation of resources for female sports, occurred at a time when more money than ever is made available to university athletes.

The recent house against the Supreme Court of the NCAA Court has legalized, for the first time, universities directly paying university athletes through income sharing. Previously, university athletes were not allowed to earn money only via Nile. But Trump’s mandate prevents athletes from being able to legally accept money at any third party to play for a certain school.

“There were positive elements in that he tried to regulate an unregulated field,” said Steinberg.

Steinberg believes that restricting the “collectives”, which means that third parties who paid athletes to pay certain universities, was essential to keep the recruitment fair.

“While [schools] Can always make an agreement to a player, he will have to adapt an equitable value, “said Steinberg.” This should cool the volatile recruitment market for money. “”

Steinberg also praised the decree of protecting and preserving resources for university sports other than football and male basketball, in particular female sports that do not generate so much income.

“It has a series of standards based on the size of the income from the athletics department which forces not to reduce the scholarships for the players of these sports, so it’s a protective device,” said Steinberg.

“If part of the objective is to provide the most educational opportunities to the greatest number of students, and we think that playing sports is one of them, then this cannot simply be university football, basketball and women’s basketball; this must be a larger burden to protect these sports.”

The executive decree only presents general objectives and gives the Trump administration 30 days to design a framework before its implementation.

Steinberg believes that the defined language of the order must specifically determine third parties can contribute to recruitment in order to effectively prevent third parties from occurring, while not being one of the other resources for university boosters sports programs and not annoying the Nile market.

“You must have guidelines in terms of collectives or external organizations may or cannot do in terms of money contribution to this recruitment process, and it must then install certain measures and criteria as to an acceptable case is based on the brand and marketing of players,” said Steinberg.

Steinberg also called for the implementation of a salary ceiling in university football and male basketball.
