The main Sindh dams see strong entrances, flood alerts issued

The provincial rainy and emergency provincial flood cell reported significant changes in the Sindh water situation, with high increases in entries and outputs in the main dams.

In Trimmu dam, the water entries jumped by 112,576 CUSECS in the last 12 hours, reaching 488,169 CUSECs, with outputs recorded at the same level.

At the Panjnad dam, the entries and exits were stable at 345,047 Cuses, influencing the conditions of the damdu and sukkur dams downstream.

The GUDDU dam recorded entries of 366,151 brackets and outputs of 328,487 CUSECS, with a major flood wave that should pass today.

Authorities have warned that fluctuating water levels can worsen the situation in neighboring areas. Residents of the Sehwan River belt were invited to evacuate.

The Minister of Accri and Taxation of the Sindh, Mukesh Kumar Chawla, said that all the necessary measures had been completed to manage flood waters and that the officials were closely monitoring developments.

The president of the Sindh Assembly, Syed Owais Qadir Shah, during a visit to the Sukkur dam, said that the real scale of the situation would be clear once the flood wave has reached Panjnad and Guddu.

At the Sukkur dam, the inputs were recorded at 329,990 brackets and outings at 281,985 brackets, bringing unusual changes to water levels and affecting the surrounding areas.

The Kotri dam reported inputs of 245,452 brackets and outputs of 226,497 brackets, above normal levels and an impact on downstream river flows.

At least 907 people have lost their lives and 1044 others injured so far under rain and flood incidents across the country, said National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

According to NDMA statistics, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) reported the greatest number of deaths with 502 deaths and 218 injuries. In Punjab, 223 people were killed and 654 injured, while Sindh recorded 58 deaths and 78 injuries during the monsoon season.

Balutchistan reported 26 deaths and five injuries, while Gilgit-Baltistan recorded 41 deaths and 52 injuries due to rains, sudden floods and landslides. In addition, 38 deaths were reported in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and nine in Islamabad.

The NDMA also noted that 6,180 cattle have perished and that 7,848 houses were damaged under rain incidents and linked to floods.

Meanwhile, the NDMA has issued a warning warning of potential urban floods and lightning in some parts of Islamabad and northern Punjab due to the development of a solid meteorological system.

According to NDMA, strong precipitation accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are expected in Murrier, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal and Jhelum. “The formation of imposing cumulative clouds, triggered by intense heat, can cause heavy showers and lightning blows,” said NDMA.

He warned that hilly areas may experience landslides, while heavy rains could damage low infrastructure and cause power outages.

The NDMA advised residents to stay away from trees and weak structures, to park vehicles in safe places and to avoid unnecessary trips.

At least five people, including a woman and four children, lost their lives after a boat carrying victims of flood capsized during an evacuation operation in Jalalpur Pirwala on Saturday, officials confirmed.

According to Rescue 1122, more than 20 people were on board when the boat overturned due to high water. The rescue teams responded quickly and managed to save more than a dozen people.

“Our volunteers risked their lives and saved more than 12 people from unleashed waters,” said RESCUE 1122 spokesperson, adding that the unfortunate accident occurred during a flood relief operation in the Multan region.

The director general of the PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, ordered the authorities to ensure that the wounded receive the best medical treatment and have ordered that evacuation efforts must prioritize security. “Private or official rescue boats should in no case be overloaded in any case,” he said.

The rescue spokesman has added that so far, more than 9,000 people have been saved from the areas struck by the floods in Multan, while more than 350,000 people and more than 300,000 cattle were evacuated in advance to safer places.
