- Microsoft adds a writing function powered by AI with a notebook as part of Copilot Plus
- Writing uses prompts to generate and refine the text
- The update also improves painting with a sticker generator and the snipping tool with smart reframing
The Microsoft notepad is almost a tool as basic as you will find it on Windows. Just a basic virgin slate for writing. But, like everything else these days, Microsoft decided to infuse the notebook with an AI.
The new notebook feature is called “writing” and is part of an Windows 11 update currently tested by Windows Insiders.
As its name suggests, Write obtains a notebook to write (and modify). You can submit an prompt, and he will write text on your behalf, or rewrite something that you have already put in place in something more polite or a different length or tone. Just click right -click in a document, then click on writing, and Windows Copilot will produce an prompt box.
You can submit the prompt and see what AI offers. Then you can choose to accept it, refine it or start again.
The functionality is based on other AI tools than the notepad has added in the past year. There is the summary tool and the rewriting tool to allow you to modify the tone or the structure of your text.
Really, “writing” is the big one. It transforms the notepad of a passive canvas into something a little more active and encourages people to collaborate with one of the many IA interfaces in Microsoft.
SNIPPING AND PAINTING AI
The notepad is not the only improvement in AI added to conventional Microsoft applications. The painting obtains an AI sticker generator which transforms text into images and a tool for selecting objects that uses AI to understand what is in the foreground and what is the background. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Snipping Tool can now automatically crop and resize your screenshots depending on what he thinks you are trying to highlight.
Now all this magic of AI is not entirely free. To use new notebook and paint features, you will need to connect with a Microsoft account and run Windows 11 on one of the new PC Copilot Plus Microsoft. There is also a credit system in place, which means that AI tools will be measured, although Microsoft has not announced how much it will cost.
