Move on the eagles, another raptor takes control of the grill.

The ospreys who have chosen to raise their chicks in a nest over a luminous pole in a football stadium at the Minnesota high school now have the whole field for themselves.

Ospreys are a species protected by the federal government and the State, and due to their nesting location, the Eagles football team at Apple Valley Lycée must reorganize their schedule.

“When you tell someone this story of ‘wow, we have to reprogram because there is an oscrey nest in our stadium’ ‘

The Eagles must now play all their home matches during the day, because lighting the spotlights where the birds have their nest could hurt them.

Heidi Cyr, from Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, said the school can withdraw the nest once the Osprey chicks are able to fly away, which should not take too long.

“Fortunately for Apple Valley, they should be able to remove the nest in probably a week because birds have already taken some of their first flights,” said Cyr.

The school, which learned of the nest in June, sent a drone every few days to verify the progress of the chicks.

School managers plan to move the nest to another platform on the school field and strengthen deterrents on the lights of the stadium once the chicks are leaving, hoping that the osprreys will return next year.

“So if someone sees it happening, don’t worry,” said Cyr. “The birds are safe. They managed to leave the nest, and they are on the way to become adults themselves.”

Ospreys are a large bird of prey with a scale of up to six feet, and they like to build high places nests with a clear view.

“When you see these large birds flying through your field with these gigantic sticks, you start to ask questions like:” What’s going on here? “,” Said Hanson. “And you take a look at this nest, right? And you say to yourself:” OK, it’s not your average bird. “”

He said that other schools have been useful to find alternative places and hours for games.

The ministry sometimes emits nest withdrawal permits when oscreys make nests on critical infrastructure such as utility posts and mobile phone tower, but they are generally refused if the chicks remain.

The Balbuzards were withdrawn from the list of special concerns of Minnesota in 2015 following the efforts to reconstruct their population.
