Islamabad:
An appeal notice was submitted Wednesday to the National Assembly by Women Legislators of the PML-N concerning the persistent refusal of inheritance tax to women.
The Minister of State with railways Bilal Azhar Kayani informed the room that a total of 1,772 complaints had been recorded concerning the refusal of the inheritance of women.
He added that a dedicated assistance line had also been created to approach these grievances.
“The federal mediator plays an active role in the question of guaranteeing that women receive their legitimate share in the inheritance,” said the minister, while calling on the judiciary to accelerate procedures in succession affairs involving women instead of issuing stay orders that delay justice.
Speaking on the issue, PML-N Mna Shaista Pervaiz Malik questioned the gap between legislation and application. “The truth is that there are many laws in place concerning the rights of women – we hear, where is the implementation?”
Kayani recognized the question by saying: “I concede that the laws on successions related to women are not effectively implemented”.
The PML-N Asiya Naz Tanoli legislator deplored that women were often deprived of their rights by local panchayats and jirgas, which continue to operate parallel to the formal legal system.
The Minister of State said that women have access to recording complaints via the 1099 telephone assistance line.
Meanwhile, the president of the PakhtunkhWhwa Mill Awami party, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who also directs Tehreek-E-Tahafuz-e-Aain, deposited an exhorting resolution to ensure that women receive their full share in the inheritance.
“Any Muslim who denies a woman his share in the inheritance in contradiction with the Koran is in violation of his commandments,” said Achakzai.
