The National Assembly approved on Tuesday a bill imposing a 25% quota for free university studies for deserving students across the country, Express News reported.
The lower room of Parliament adopted two key laws, the culmination being a new law obliging universities to allocate 25% of their seats for free education to financially deserving students.
The Pakistan Party Party (PPP) MNA Agha Rafiullah called for the inclusion of a 25% quota for free education within the Bill on the Institute of Sciences and Technology specifically for deserving and very efficient students. The amendment was approved by the Assembly.

However, an amendment proposed by Jamiat Ulema-E-Islam (JUI) MNA Aliya Kamran, opposing the bill on the grounds that education is the responsibility of the provincial jurisdiction, has been rejected.
In addition to the bill on free education quotas, the Chamber approved the bill of the Institute for Sciences and Technology and the bill on the international examination committee 2024.
The Chamber also approved the bill on the 2024 International Examination Committee, presented by the Chairman of the Kashmir Committee, MNA Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, which seeks to establish an internationally recognized examination authority in Pakistan.
After the adoption of the Bills, the session of the National Assembly was adjourned until 11:00 a.m. the next day.
