After the Nintendo Switch 2 direct, we have our first overview of how Nintendo could use its new USB-C port mounted on the top.
When Nintendo unveiled the new switch 2, the USB-C Secondary port attracted my attention. No, not because I want a more practical load port to play in tablet mode or because I use wired controllers and I cannot be disturbed to repaint them in the USB-C ports of the quay.
Instead, I was especially excited by what this new port could represent for future accessories from Switch 2, and Nintendo delivered with its new camera Nintendo Switch 2.
As part of its latest livestream, Nintendo unveiled GameChat, which uses the new camera for video calls, AR features in games and emots. It will be available at launch – June 5, 2025 – for $ 49.99 / £ 49.99.
When writing these lines, we have not seen any solo games using the camera, but over time you may use it for motion capture games like the good old day of Eyetoy and Kinect Gaming.
I hope, however, that the camera is only the start. I would love to see the tastes of the Super Scope 6, the Game Boy camera and the pocket printer, or even the Wii’s Balance Board.
In a direct also slightly disappointing without any major launch title to attract my attention beyond Mario Kart World, this second USB-C port and its peripheral potential remains one of the most interesting developments in the console.
