Terramaster is preparing to launch the D1 SSD Plus, a high portable SSD box that claims to provide some of the fastest writing speeds observed in consumption equipment.
When associated with a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB and tested on a M4 Mac Mac Apple M4 Pro Min, the company says that the D1 has reached 3,498 MB / s writing and reading speeds of 3,641 MB / s.
“Transfer 3 GB of files to ~ 1 second”, notes the company, thanks to a USB4 interface capable of 40 Gbit / s.
Built for speed, but what about consistency?
The transfer speed is impressive on paper, but the performances will always spend workflows from the real world, in particular outside the closely controlled references.
The D1 SSD Plus uses a NVME PCIe M.2 2280 interface and supports SSDs up to 8 TB. The speaker is without a fan, based on a fully closed aluminum alloy chassis which offers the usual heat dissipation zone three times.
Terramaster promises silent and stable performance, even in full load, but without active cooling, thermal limitation during prolonged operations could still be a factor to consider, in particular in mobile editing environments.
The device supports Thunderbolt 5/4/3 and USB standards ranging from 4.0 to 3.0.
It aims to operate in a transparent manner on macOS and Windows systems, although Terramaster warns that “some Windows PCs with Thunderbolt 3 interfaces can have incomplete management of the USB4 protocol”, which has caused detection problems.
This external SSD is delivered with integrated guarantees against tension overvoltages, electrostatic discharge and short-circuits.
It also supports the Terramaster ADP application for mobile backup, and TPC Backupper for Windows PCs, which both offer incremental and differential backup options.
This could appeal to those who compare the devices for the best portable hard drive, although users looking for simpler plug-and-play options can find the additional steps a barrier.
The SSD Plus terramaster brings a raw speed and utility, but the very characteristics that make it powerful, such as its dependence on high -level SSDs and compatibility with advanced protocols, also limit its accessibility.
