- Dyson announced the new ultra-thin and ultra-light pencil
- Its new soft floor head is designed to avoid traffic jams
- It looks like a specialized model for hard floors
I write on the vacuum cleaners to live, and although performance vary, most of the new models today tend to be alike.
Thus, when the news of a new addition to the Dyson Sacuum range landed in my reception box, I expected to see something similar to its existing models: smooth and high quality, but not particularly distinctive or surprising.
How bad I was.
The recently unveiled Dyson pencil has not only an unusual name, it is one of the most unique vacuum cleaners I have seen. This brand knows what it does on this market – it means that some of the best wireless vacuum cleaners you can buy, and the best Dyson vacuum cleaners today include features that you always find anywhere else.
Thus, while the penonvac moves away from the proven formula of what works for vacuum cleaners, I am very optimistic about its performance. Here is an overview of the most intriguing features of this new launch …
1. It’s ridiculously thin
The most immediately noticeable thing about the pencil is that it is incredibly rationalized. Without the head of the soil, all measures 1.5 inches / 3.8 cm in diameter. To make this possible, the brand had to develop a tiny new engine – the Dyson Hyperdymium 140K engine is only 1.1 inches / 2.8 cm wide and hidden entirely in the handle.
The penonvac is also slightly light, ending at 4 lb / 1.8 kg. For the context, the lightest option of our best wireless vacuum tower right now is 5.7 lb / 2.6 kg, and there are a number of models that weigh more than 6.6 lb / 3 kg.
Generally, when you shrink the void, you sacrifice the power. This is why portable vacuums tend to be much less “zero” than large options. This is true for the pencilvac – there are 55Aw suction, compared to 115AW for the V8 (the oldest Dyson stick vacuum in the current beach) and a massive 280AW for the last and the largest Gen5detect. However, although it is unlikely to adapt to a really deep cleaning, it is always a decent amount of suction for size and weight.
As a side note, the 1.5 inch / 3.8 cm diameter is not incident. The founder of the brand, James Dyson, said: “I wanted to make a vacuum of only 38 mm in diameter for a long time (like my last hair dryer, The Supersonic R)”. The Dyson Supersonic R is the hose-shaped dryer which was initially published only for professionals, but recently joined the main consumers range.
2. There are cones instead of rollers
Go down to the end of the business and you will find the new “fluffycon” floor. It looks like a Pokémon, but it is actually a cleaner head. The vacuum cleaners traditionally have a brush roll, the maximum two and they are in the shape of a tube. Dyson Crayervac has four brushes and they are all conical.
There is a logic with a tapered shape: it helps direct long hair along the roller and in the dust cup, while with parallel rolls, the hair tends to wrap and stay there, until you tear it away or attack it with scissors. The Dyson hair screw tool also has a conical brush roll and works exactly as it is supposed to tackle long hair.
The cones project on the sides so that they can clean on the right on the edges of the rooms, and everything can remain flat on the ground, with a release of only 9.5 cm / 3.75 inches of the ground.
I am interested in the description of Dyson of the rollers as “soft”, because in the vocabulary of the brand which generally indicates a gentle roller to use only on hard floors. In fact, the more I look at this void, the more I am convinced that it is a specialized model just for use on hard ground. It is not specified in the press material that I have so far, but it would make sense with the lower suction and the smallest dust capacity.
3. There is no cup of visible dust
One of the most confusing things on the penonvac is that it does not seem to have a cup of dust. Of course, there is one – like the engine, it is hidden inside the handle.
The capacity is next to it: only 0.08 L. However, Dyson introduced a dust compression system, which uses air To crush the particles so that they take as little space as possible. Dyson claims that this means that it can contain physical volume five times.
The emptying process has also been redesigned, with a push lever system replaced by a “syringe, a syringe, a touched bins ejection mechanism”.
As it pushes dust and debris, the mechanism simultaneously wipes the “shroud”. I am not completely clear what is the “shroud” in this context, but I know that keeping the internal mechanisms clean is essential for effective vacuum performance, so it seems to be a good thing.
4. The head of the ground shines and seems to float
In addition to siphoning the hair while you clean, the head cones on the ground have another turn in their handle. The cones run in opposite directions, the objective being that this vacuum cleaner is cleaned just as well when pushed to the front as when it is remote. This is a bit of a weak point on the head of the ordinary fluffy floor – he has no trouble sucking things by advancing, but withdrawing him and the debris sets off behind him.
I am intrigued to see how this new approach works in practice – especially because Dyson describes it as “floating” on the ground. I also wonder, if this can make this vacuum reversible, since the handle section seems very symmetrical.
Dyson also added “laser -shaped” lighting to the front and back of the head of the ground. This is another characteristic borrowed from the exposure of the soil down and helps to create large shadows on the smallest pieces of dust, which could otherwise miss. It only works on hard floors, which is another indication that this vacation is probably not for the carpet.
There is an intriguing addition to the range of tools in the form of a “combi-revice rotary tool”, designed for cleaning in clumsy gaps. This seems particularly focused on cleaning high-up, where it can be difficult to correct your angles. This has a particular meaning for a ultra-light vacuum like this, which is much easier to lift above your head than your average emptiness.
By the way, it seems that the pencil is buttoned rather than a trigger. This is dictated by the rationalized form, but it is also excellent news for maneuverability and easy to use – the fact that many Dyson vacs always use a trigger to activate is a perpetual bug.
You will also get a conical hair screw tool, similar to that included with new Dyson stick vacuum cleaners, to tackle long hair on furniture. Both can be stored on the magnetic loading platform.
6. It is connected to the application
I am much less enthusiastic about this feature, but I have the impression of emphasizing that it is the first Dyson wireless vacuum to connect to the Mydyson application. The application will provide more information on the battery life and will also report the state of the filter. However, there is also a screen on the void itself showing the remaining battery, so I hope that the connection of the application is an optional supplement rather than an essential.
Price and availability
The penonvac will arrive first in Australia, with a launch scheduled for August 2025. This must be sold in the United Kingdom in 2026, and I expect information on Si / When it will arrive in the United States. For the moment, I have no information on prices at all – I will update this article with more details when I have them.
