Wharfedale has considerably improved its best-selling EVO range of EVO speakers, and the new fifth generation EVO 5 speakers are delivered with a very important visual refreshment and audio improvements.
There are five models in the range: two Standmounts speakers (EVO 5.1 and 5.2), two floors (EVO 5.3 and 5.4) and a speaker from the cinema center (EVO 5.C). These are magnificent things and come in new color options, but what happened inside is what really matters here.
Wharfedale Evos has already clashed with speakers costing much more money, and these fifth generation versions promise to ring even better.
Wharfedale EVO 5 Pregnant: Key characteristics and price
The first upgrade is towards the air movement transformer (AMT), which Wharfedale uses instead of dome tweeters: it is a pleated diaphragm that apparently pushes four times more air than comparable traditional tweeters, offering lower distortion and faster transitional responses. Wharfedale says it also produces a wider range of frequencies and excellent horizontal dispersion.
The EVO 5 version is larger than before – 35×70 mm compared to 30×60 mm in the EVO 4 – and offers improved efficiency and dispersion. Behind there is the new silent damping, which should reduce the reflections of sound waves inside the speaker.
There is more where Silentweave comes from: Resoframe and Resoseal, also new for the EVO 5, are respectively a new acoustic amortization frame and aim to help driving units to provide a softer response.
The mid -range driver is redesigned for the fifth generation, with the aforementioned resoframe and Silentweave. And bass drivers use the advanced low -distortion engine system seen for the first time in Elysian flagship models. This teams up with a 130 mm or 150 mm Kevlar cone depending on the speaker model and a low loss rubber environment for a natural mid-range and a tight bass.
The multisgments have also been redesigned and benefit from a redesigned printed circuit card which offers a shorter path between components and driving units. In three models, it is divided into separate PCB for the environment / treble and for bass to reduce electromagnetic interference.
The bass reflex design comes from the more premium aura of Wharfedale and the Elysian ranges, with a slit at the base of the speaker rather than a more conventional front or rear port. Where the EVO 4 passed out in two directions, the EVO 5 sells in three, which, according to Wharfedale, optimizes the distribution of the air flow for the deep, articulated and well integrated bass. The design also makes the speakers “less picky” on the placement than the conceptions conventionally worn.
Cabinets are larger than their EVO 4 counterparts and made from a different density wood sandwich to reduce the sink of the panel to inaudible levels and reduce the unwanted sound energy leak. And below, there is a hybrid metal / wood base for rigidity and isolation.
The Walnut Wood option is transported in front of the EVO 4, but blacks and whites are now a high quality Matt and there is a new Matt option called Lunar Gray.
EVO 5 speakers will be available from June 2025. Prices are:
