- NSA seniors spoke at the international cybersecurity conference at Fordham University in New York
- They claim that Volt Typhoon wanted to hide in American critical infrastructure in the event of war with the United States on Taiwan
- The campaign has been a failure since the threat actors were deleted, said the NSA
Volt Typhoon, an actor of threat sponsored by the Chinese state who targeted the American critical infrastructure, has not achieved its main objective – to maintain long -term invisible persistence on key objectives.
This is in accordance with senior cybersecurity officials of the National Safety Agency (NSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Speaking at the recent international cybersecurity conference at Fordham University in New York, the agents discussed the “Typhoon” campaign as a whole and confirmed that she was launching bases for a potential climbing of conflict on Taiwan.
No perseverance maintains
“The good news is that they have really failed. They wanted to persist for a very long time in domestic networks for a very long time so that if and when they had to disturb these networks, they could. They did not succeed in this campaign,” said Kristina Walter, director of the Cybersecurity Center for NSA.
“We, with the private sector, with the FBI, found them, understood how they used operating systems, how they use legitimate references to maintain persistence, and frankly, we have equipped the whole private sector and the US government to hunt and detect them.”
Being able to break security systems and access critical infrastructure should however be worrying in itself.
In mid-March 2025, it was reported that Volt Typhoon had access to the Operational Network (OT) of the Massachusetts Littleton Electric Light and Water Department (LELWD) from ten months in 2023. The intrusion lasted from February to November 2023.
Before that, in January 2025, Volt Typhoon targeted the critical infrastructure of the little island nation of Guam, seeking to disturb and sabotage services in the region, apparently targeting GPA (Guam Power Authority) to wreak havoc on the island, which houses a large American military base.
