The death toll of a collapse of the Indonesian school increased to 37 Sunday, officials said, while the rescuers recovered more victims buried under the rubble.
Part of the several floor building on the Java Island of Indonesia suddenly collapsed on Monday while the students met for afternoon prayers.
“On Sunday morning, the number of victims recovered was 141. 104 were in safety, 37 died,” said the director of research and national rescue operations, Yudhi Bramantyo, in a statement.
He added that 26 people were still missing.
The number of deaths included a part of the body that the rescuers recovered rubble on Saturday, said Yudhi.
The Local Research and Rescue Agency Nanang Sigit confirmed the number of deaths of 37 in a separate declaration.
Investigators examined the cause of the collapse, but the initial signs highlighted the lower quality construction, according to experts.
The rescue operation was complex because vibrations in one place could affect other areas, officials said.
But the families of the missing agreed on Thursday so that heavy equipment was used, after the “golden period” of 72 hours for the best chance of survival.
