An Olympic medalist died after being struck by lightning.
Athlete Alpine Skier and Ski Cross Audun Groenvold was struck by lightning during a “cabin trip”, the Norwegian ski federation announced on Wednesday. He was 49 years old.
“It is with great sadness that we received the news of the untimely death of Audun Greenvold,” said the federation. “The former national athlete of alpine ski and ski cross was recently struck by lightning during a cabin trip.”

The Federation said that Greenvold was “quickly transported to hospital and received treatment for injuries he suffered during lightning”, then died on Tuesday evening.
Greenvold was struck by the Bolt on Saturday.
Greenvold was a member of the Norway alpine ski team before moving to Freestyle and Ski Cross in 2004. He won a bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
He had a podium as an alpine skier of the World Cup, finishing third in a descent into Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999. He also won a bronze medal with a ski cross championships at the 2005 World Cross skiing in 2007.
After the end of his career, he became coach of the national team and commentator on television.

“Norwegian ski has lost an eminent figure, which has mean both for Alpine and Freestyle communities,” said the president of the Federation Tove Moe Dyrhaug, adding that his death creates “a huge void”.
Greenvold finished behind Michael Schmid in Switzerland and Andreas Matt of Austria at the Vancouver Games.
He participated in his first race at the age of 3 and won the points of the Alpine Ski World Cup for the first time two months before his 21st birthday in 1996.

Greenvold participated in the Free Ski World Cup across Europe, where he won three victories. Two of them came in a month in 2007, and the other came in 2010. He also finished the other three times.
