Davante Adams has long been one of the most physical receivers in the NFL, but he could not free himself from the tenacious press in recruitment by the coach of the Rams of Los Angeles Sean Mcvay.
“Honestly, the period is not too long since I was not a free man, and Sean wanted to make sure he kept that, for sure,” said Adams at his introductory press conference on Thursday.
Adams said Mcvay’s attention was one of the main reasons why he had signed a two -year contract that could be worth up to $ 46 million to reach Rams. Many of these conversations took place while Adams, 32, was on vacation in Japan.
“And, I mean, I thought he was there too,” said Adams. “I spoke to him more than I spoke to my wife. But he definitely showed a lot of interest.”
Adams said he had met Mcvay for the first time at Kentucky Derby in 2019. In the previous October, Adams had five receptions for 133 yards for Green Bay packers against Rams. Mcvay expressed his appreciation for Adams’ play, which first sparked the idea of potential collaboration.
It was only when Adams became a free agent for the first time after 11 seasons with packers, Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets that he fully understood how much Mcvay appreciated him.
“He sent me a couple of cassettes on myself,” said Adams. “It was a bit like Jon Gruden-Esque. And you know how he is with Ball, so he breaks down each clip. The first was like seven minutes, then he sent another which was probably two minutes where he crosses everything.
“I thought he had taken this work to be on television for a minute when I was watching him, but, yes, it just shows how much ball means for him, how much I was a priority for him.”
Adams comes out of his sixth career reception season of 1,000 yards, ending with 85 catches, 1,063 yards and eight affected in 14 games with raiders and jets. It offers production and experience to compensate for the loss of the faithful Cooper Kupp, which was released after the RAMs could not find a trading partner for the MVP of the Super Bowl 56.
The presence of Adams could bring a different aspect to the Mcvay offensive, which tended to rely on the setting in motion of the Kupp or Breakout Puka Nacua Nacua to give free receptors out of the melee line to find space in the short or intermediate defense levels.
At 6 feet 1 inch and 215 pounds, Adams can create a separation by itself. He is also a follower in the red zone to make disputed sockets, which had trouble with which the RAMs fought last season. They ranked 25th as a percentage of a hit to use in the regular season and were 2-in-5 by scoring the red zone in a defeat in the NFC qualifiers against the philadelphia eagles in January.
“He knows my sense of football, and it’s nothing that I am going to enter, you know, put my foot,” I know so much that the ball, do it in my own way, “said Adams about his discussions with McVay. “But it just helps when you see it both in the same way. At the moment, I imagine it somehow like that for the year.”
In the estimate of Adams, Rams have everything he could have wished in a new destination. They have a team capable of broadcasting for the Super Bowl, as evidenced by their 28-22 defeat in the snow to give the Eagles of the possible champion their most difficult test of the playoffs. They have a veteran quarterrier experienced in Matthew Stafford, who previously accentuated the game of another receiver to the big body of Calvin Johnson.
“Rams move looks like a very substantial agreement, perhaps two years to align with an excellent offensive culture with Sean Mcvay and Matt Stafford,” said Colin Cowherd on “The herd”.
The RAMs also allow Adams to be closer to family and friends, to return to his native California after having grown up in the bay region and frequented the University of Fresno State.
Even Adams’s n ° 17 jersey was available, Nacua making a voluntary change after her first two out -of -competition seasons as a professional.
“Before I even knowing with certainty if I was heading for the, he was already talking about carrying (n °) 12,” said Adams. “For everyone who wants to hate me for having bought them new jerseys, I didn’t tell him. I didn’t pay him. I did nothing. It was out of the kindness of his heart, and he worn it at university, so I guess it makes sense.”
