Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took note and ordered an investigation following an increase in massive remuneration for the president of the National Assembly and the Vice-President as well as the President of the Senate and the Vice-President. A significant salary increase has triggered a counterpoup, arousing strong criticism from political and public circles.

Their wages increased by 600% unprecedented, from RS205,000 to an RS1.95 million rupees. The decision to increase the wages and advantages of these senior officials was approved by the federal government, the Prime Minister’s office now investigating the issue after the public offices.

The Minister of Defense, Khawaja Asif, condemned the increase, appealing to him “financial vulgarity” and stressing that such increases were insensitive to the struggles of the ordinary man. “We must remember that our dignity and our honor depend on the well-being of the people,” he added.

In response to criticism, the National Assembly and the Senate secretariat specified that these salary increases were not self-imposed by the officials in question but were approved by the federal government.

Sources of the secretariat noted that neither the president of the NA nor the president of the Senate could unilaterally increase their salary, these changes require the consent of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

Completely complicating the problem, on May 29, a government notification was published detailing wages and revised allowances, including a 50% increase in discretionary allowances. According to notification, the approval of the increase in wages was given by the federal government.

On the other hand, the recent budget presented by the government shows an increase in the wages of parliamentarians and the federal cabinet compared to last year.

According to budgetary documents, proposals were made to allocate 16.29 billion rupees for the National Assembly and 9.05 billion rupees for the Senate.

From this, 5.08 billion rupees are allocated to the wages and advantages of members of the National Assembly, to 2.58 billion rupees for their wages, to 2.50 billion rupees for travel costs and 2.17 billion rupees for the wage and advantages budget.

In addition, RS1.24 billion are offered for the advantages of committee presidents, and RS393.4 million for the wages and benefits of the speaker and vice-president.

In addition, 83.4 million rupees are offered for the wages and benefits of the opposition chief and their staff. For members of the Senate, 40 million rupees are allocated to wages and 106.38 million rupees for their advantages.

The wages and advantages of the President of the Senate, the Vice-President, and their staff will be allocated RS18.96 million, while the wages and advantages of the Presidents of the Senate Committee will be awarded 144.33 million rupees.

The government’s budgetary proposal also includes a doubling of the firm’s current expenses. The wage budget and the advantages of the members of the firm is offered to go from RS35.18 million to 68.87 million rupees.

The budget of federal ministers and state ministers is proposed to go from RS27 million to 50.54 million rupees. According to the law modified for members of the Parliament in July 2024, their advantages will include 30 air tickets per year (which can be postponed next year if they are unused and can be used by their families).

In addition, they will receive allowances to attend the National Assembly, the Senate and the joint sessions three days before and three days after the sessions, as well as to attend standard meetings and special committees two days before and two days later.

They will also receive around 9,600 rupees per day for additional expenses, 8,000 rupees for office expenses, 10,000 rupees for telephone bills and RS25 per kilometer for vehicle expenses.

In addition, RS2,000 for the daily rent of households, travel by living room in trains and other allowances will be provided. Current and former parliamentarians will be entitled to the same health and other establishments as federal secretaries.

If a parliamentarian becomes chairman of the committee, he will receive 25,000 additional rupees per month, as well as 360 liters of petrol, four employees and a vehicle ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 cm3, as well as an office.
