The president of Nintendo Shuntaro Furukawa said that the prediction of sales below that provided for the Nintendo Switch 2 is due to the high price of the console.
Following her financial report last week, where Nintendo said he was expecting to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles during his launch window last week (via VGC), investors have since asked the company why she had predicted lower sales than some analysts were planning.
“We plan that Nintendo Switch 2 sells sales of equipment of 15 million units for this exercise,” said Furukawa in a new Q&R published today. “We set this figure in order to reach the same level of sale that we reached with Nintendo Switch during the period of about 10 months between its launch in March 2017 and December of the same year.”
Furukawa also said the high cost of the console of $ 449.99 / £ 395.99 is a key factor in its forecasts, but that its rear compatibility and its software bundles will increase sales before the end of the first year.
“Nintendo Switch 2 is at a relatively high price compared to Nintendo Switch, we therefore recognize that there are challenges corresponding to early adoption,” said the president of Nintendo. “That said, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible Nintendo Switch software, so there is continuity between the platforms. We take measures such as grouping software with the hardware to accelerate adoption during the first exercise, aimed at taking the same start that we did with Nintendo Switch.”
Furukawa continued, claiming that the limits of material production capacity “were not a factor” in its sales prediction, and that the recent increase in American prices or the possibility that a recession “has not affected our sales volume forecasts either”.
“In order to make sales of 15 million units, we will have to make the equipment in quantities higher than that. Our first objective is to go to the same departure that we made with Nintendo Switch, and we work to strengthen our production capacity so that we can respond in a flexible way to demand,” he added.
After having recognized the positive comments of the practical events of Nintendo Switch 2 around the world, before returning to the high price of the console compared to the original switch, saying that “even if there is momentum around the launch, we know that it will not be easy to keep this passing momentum”.
“We are working to accelerate the production of Nintendo Switch 2 equipment since even before we organize the events of Nintendo Switch 2 of experience and have started my Nintendo Store applications. Our sales volume forecasts have not been determined according to any limit to production capacity,” he said.
Nintendo also predicted that it sold 45 million units in the Nintendo Switch 2 software, excluding the Mario Kart World Copies included in Switch 2 Bundles, which would exceed 52 million software units sold for the switch within 10 months of its launch.
It was said that this is partly due to “a more robust range” of publisher games and the availability of 2 -edition Switch titles.
Furukawa was then invited to confirm the impact of the United States prices expected on sales forecasts after Nintendo was forced to increase the price of some of its next accessories last month.
“Our financial projections were created on the basis of the 10% American prices hypothesis on products produced in Japan, Vietnam and Cambodia, and 145% on China,” he said, but could not disclose the impact of prices on individual products, such as certain accessories and amiibo, which are produced in China.
“Our basic policy is that for any country or region, if prices are imposed, we recognize them as part of the cost and integrons into the price,” added Furukawa. “On the other hand, the exercise ending in March 2026 is the launch period of our first new video game system dedicated in eight years. If the tariff hypotheses change, we will consider how to manage the situation while keeping in mind the importance of the momentum of the platform and the growth of the material installation base.”
The Nintendo Switch 2 was launched worldwide on June 5, 2025. British pre -orders and American pre -orders are now live.
