Openai president Greg Brockman described a future in which AI tools will work constantly, even when their users sleep.
In an interview with CNBC alongside the CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, and the CEO of Openai, Sam Altman, Brockman said that the world would possibly need “10 billion GPUs” to support this vision.
He framed demand in the context of a broader trajectory where “the economy is fueled by calculation”, suggesting that IT resources could become as central as currency.

Brockman went further by saying: “You really want each person to have their own dedicated GPU”.
The idea echoes previous technological ambitions, such as Bill Gates’ prediction in the 1990s that there would be a computer on each desktop.
At the time, this notion was both celebrated and ridiculed, but today, computer devices have become almost omnipresent.
Brockman’s design of a GPU for each individual is in this line, even if criticism may wonder if the comparison is premature given the constraints of global resources.
While Nvidia has become the undisputed supplier of GPU equipment for large -scale AI models, the figures mentioned are astounding.
Altman compared the Nvidia-Openai partnership on the Apollo program, citing its unprecedented magnitude.
However, these projections do not contain any detailed discussion on the energy imprint that such an infrastructure would require.
Brockman also mentioned an imminent “shortage of calculations”, which implies that the supply of GPU could become a global strangulation point.
The role of Nvidia products has already entered a sensitive geopolitical ground, especially in commercial disputes between the United States and China.
If GPUs become de facto economic units in an economy focused on calculation, this rarity could worsen trade and diplomatic tensions.
Although rhetoric around AI and agent systems always functional is magnificent, the feasibility remains uncertain.
A system that grants each person a dedicated GPU would put to the test of manufacturing capacity, energy production and distribution channels.
Without clear answers to these challenges, vision may look less like a roadmap than an ambitious speech.
