- Sony was the big winner in terms of sales this Black Friday
- PS5 has outsold Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox systems thanks to heavy discounts
- Xbox consoles were even beaten by an obscure family gaming machine
If you were keeping an eye on console deals this Black Friday, it probably won’t come as a surprise that the PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console during the sales event in the US and UK.
According to Circana data, the PS5 accounted for 47% of console sales in the United States, almost double the share of the Nintendo Switch 2 (which stood at 23%) and more than four times that of the Xbox (just 10%).
In short, this period was a great victory for Sony and a disastrous result for Microsoft. Even an obscure system called Nex Playground was more popular than the Xbox Series X and Series S, accounting for 14% of sales.
Designed with families in mind, the Nex Playground is a cube-shaped device billed as an “active playground” rather than a traditional gaming console. It costs $249.99 and comes with five ready-to-play games, including Fruit Ninja.
Players control the Nex Playground via motion control, captured by a camera on its facade.
It was a similar story in the UK, where GSD reports that the PS5 had a 62% market share for the week. The Nintendo Switch 2 accounted for 23% while Xbox consoles only accounted for 10% of sales.
The reasons seem simple: the PS5 received by far the best discounts in both regions for Black Friday. Discounted bundles have made it a very tempting option in the US, and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition has dropped to an incredibly low price in the UK.
The Nintendo Switch 2 also received some discounts, although much more limited, which is not surprising given the console’s recent release.
On the other hand, it was almost impossible to save money on Xbox consoles, which likely pushed consumers towards the alternatives offered by Sony and Nintendo.
