- Apple uses new technology for Nix the fold in its foldable iPhone
- Now Samsung wants to use the same feature for his own devices
- This opens the scene for a major foldable head to face in 2026
We have long heard rumors that the Apple foldable iPhone to come will be delivered with a “fold” screen, which none of the best foldable phones has yet managed. In order not to be outdone, it now seems that Samsung will opt for the same result in the future Galaxy Z Fold 8 device, potentially increase the competition between the two smartphones giants.
This information comes from Apple Ming-Chi Kuo analyst, who has a solid reputation for his past leaks. In an article on X, Kuo said that Samsung would adopt key technology that Apple will use to eliminate the visible fold in its foldable iPhone.
More specifically, Kuo believes that Apple will use metal display plates pierced in laser in his foldable phone. Earlier this week, Kuo wrote that this feature will help “distribute and control flexion stress” – if it is left unanswered, this stress can cause “hardware fatigue and permanent deformation”, causing folds on the phone screen.
Now, it seems that Samsung wants in the act, Kuo reporting that the company will also use these metal plates pierced in laser in its next foldable phone. The current Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, on the other hand, does not use these plates, which results in the type of visible seam that Apple and Samsung now want to avoid.
Foldable face-off
Apple is well known for its perfectionist trends, and its goal is always to be the best rather than being the first to market. This position explains why she has not yet launched a foldable phone while her rivals have been doing them for years – and the display fold visible in these products is exactly the type of compromise that Apple would not have been willing to do.
If he is able to eliminate this defect with this new technology, Apple will jump on the opportunity to do so. And with Apple adopting this potentially higher functionality, it is clear that Samsung does not want to be left behind. As Kuo predicted it previously, Apple use of this technology could increase the bar among other foldable phones manufacturers – and also increase prices.
Apple’s foldable iPhone should go into mass production in the second half of 2026, almost at the same time as the Samsung device is also to enter production. This means that we could see an epic foldable test next year, with two major actors freeing without folds that take the ground to new heights. If you are on the market for a foldable phone, you will want to mark your calendar.
