The Senate committee declares the floods of the “national disaster”

Islamabad:

The President of the Senate Committee on the Permanence of National Food Security and Research, Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan, said that recent floods have a national disaster and have called on the government to officially designate the affected areas in the event of a disaster.

He also urged immediate assistance to the victims through the Benazir Revenue Revenue Program (BISP).

The senatorial committee, under the chairmanship of senator Ahsan, met to examine a wide range of urgent national food security problems.

The president of the Rice Exporters Association took the alarm on the sharp drop in exports in Basmati, citing interruptions of expeditions to the countries of the European Union. Senator Dash Kumar has also criticized restrictive government policies, saying that “policies must support the economy and exporters”.

The Committee decided to consult all key stakeholders before finalizing the National Agricultural Food Security and Security Order (NAFSA). Senator Ahsan ordered stakeholders to submit their recommendations before the next session.

Devastation of floods

Officials of the Ministry of Food Security informed that 2.5 million acres of agricultural land had been damaged nationally by floods.

In Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 7% of agricultural land was seriously affected, while KP alone lost 3.5 million acres. The crops have reached rice, sugar cane and corn in Punjab the hardest.

Declaring the floods of a national tragedy, Senator Ahsan said: “The heartbreaking floods caused large devastation, damaged crops worth millions”.

He reiterated his request for the government to declare the affected areas affected in the event of a disaster and immediately provides cash assistance in BISP.

The Committee has also debated interprorciales restrictions on the supply of wheat. Senator Aimal Wali Khan protested the shortages at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying that the part of the province was unjustly retained.

Senator Dash Kumar echoes the concern for Balutchistan, declaring: “The people of Balutchistan are faced with the same discrimination. This triggers national disintegration.”

Senator Ahsan strongly called to maintain article 151 of the Constitution, which guarantees free trade between the provinces. “Trade and trade must circulate freely between the provinces. These restrictions are unconstitutional and go against national integrity,” he said.

Committee departments
