- SitusAMC suffered a breach exposing both company and customer data.
- This was a smash-and-grab attack, not ransomware; The FBI is aware and the investigation is ongoing
- Affected customers may include major banks and mortgage lenders, although details and perpetrators are not being disclosed.
A global company providing consulting, technology and outsourcing services to some of the largest banks and mortgage lenders in the United States suffered a data breach that allowed hackers to steal some of its sensitive data, as well as information it held on behalf of its clients.
SitusAMC provides a comprehensive suite of services to support the entire commercial and residential real estate financing lifecycle, from loan origination and underwriting, to portfolio management, debt and equity servicing and valuation.
Its clients include large banks, private equity firms, asset managers, residential mortgage originators and servicers, CMBS/RMBS issuers, insurance companies and institutional investors. Some of the biggest names include UBS Realty Investors, JPMorgan Chase, Hines, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley.
The FBI was informed
In a brief announcement posted on its website, SitusAMC said the stolen data belongs to both it and its customers:
“Corporate data associated with certain relationships of our clients with SitusAMC, such as accounting documents and legal agreements, was affected. Certain data relating to the clients of some of our clients may also have been affected,” it said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing and third-party cybersecurity experts have been engaged.
Law enforcement was also notified, the company stressed, adding that this was not a ransomware attack, but rather a simple overwrite and data seizure.
We do not know how many SitusAMC customers are affected by this attack, nor what type of information was stolen. When contacted by media representatives, most banks declined to comment or simply did not respond to media inquiries. No threat actor has yet taken responsibility for the attack.
