- Linus Tech TIPS and KIOXIA broke the world PI calculation record
- 300 Billions of PI numbers were calculated using an SSD Kioxia NVME cluster
- The seven -month calculation effort ended with the recognition of Guinness
After Storagereview previously claimed the world record for PI calculation with more than 202 billions of figures, now Linus Media Group, the creators of the Linus technological advice Youtube Channel, did it again.
By working with Koxia, LMG has officially established a new World Record Guinness For the “most precise value of the IP”, reaching an incredible 300 billions of figures.
This step was carried out using a high performance storage configuration with 2.2 pb of the CM series of Kioxia 30.72TB and CD Series 15.36TB PCIe NVME SSDS.
Seven months and no SSD failures
The discs were organized in a NAS system connected to a double CPU calculation server. The whole operation took place continuously for almost seven months and a half.
“We knew that breaking the PI record with distributed network storage was going to be difficult – no one had really done it before the performance challenges associated with remote storage,” said Jake Tivy, writer and host, Linus Media Group.
“Fortunately for us, the reliability and performance of the SSD NVME of Kioxia allowed us to carry out intensive continuous calculation operations at speeds of up to 100 GB / s for almost seven months in a row, without a single failure of the SSD.”
The project not only broken the previous record, but did it with a wide margin. StoragereviewThe milestone of 202 Billions of Billions was enormous, but it was not officially verified by World Records Guinness.
The latest recognized reference of Guinness was 62 billions of figures, so this new effort pushed this number almost five times higher.
“Take a World Records Guinness The title of the most precise value of the IP is a huge achievement, highlighting the courage to take up a challenge and the power of great cooperation and teamwork, “said Axel Stoermann, vice-president and CTO for integrated memory and SSD at Kioxia Europe.
“The successful collaboration of Koxia America with Linus Media Group has allowed the robust capacities of our SSD NVME in the most demanding workloads. We will continue to advance the capacities of our flash technology and our SSD technology to take care of supercomputing applications,” he added.
The Linus Tech TIPS channel has published a video documenting the effort you can watch below. He also revealed the final figure of the record result. (Spoiler alert, the 300 trillionme PI number is 5.)
