The Tor project, known for its highly anonymous tor browser, has just expanded to VPNs.
The company’s first Android VPN VPN application is currently in a beta version and available on the Google Play Store.
Nicknamed the TOR VPN, the application seems to prioritize the avoidance of censorship and the increase in online confidentiality.
Tor is now actively looking for testers to try it and report bugs.
Although you can already try for yourself, the developers warn that the application is still in its infancy and is not yet ready for high-risk use, which means that it cannot compete with the best VPN suppliers.
How does TOR VPN work?
The new TOR VPN appeared on Google Play Store with little or no fanfare, and its main house on the Internet outside this list of stores is the GitHub repository of the project.
It is completely open source, which means that its code is public.

According to the Play Store page, the TOR VPN will offer confidentiality at the network level. It masks your real IP address, which is a basic feature offered by all virtual private network software (VPN), but it uses the TOR network to protect against censorship and confidentiality.
The application also gives you access to a divided tunneling, which means that you can choose the applications routed via the TOR network.
Each application that passes by Tor obtains its own IP, which means that foreigners will not be able to connect your overall online activity on several applications.
What is the difference between the TOR VPN and the browser?
The main difference between the Tor browser and the new Tor Android application is the way it fits into your device and transports traffic.
Tor Navigator is essentially a personalized version of Firefox which only proves your activity inside the browser. It obliges all the traffic of your browser via the TOR network, hiding your IP and encrypting your connections via at least three encryption layers, while dividing requests on several relays (or nodes) managed by volunteers.
On the other hand, TOR VPN works at the system level. It allows you to choose which applications send their traffic via the TOR network. Each application can obtain its own unique “circuit” and leave IP, which makes it more difficult to link your activity to different services. Indeed, the VPN extends the anonymity of Tor beyond simple navigation on the web.
Under the hood, Tor VPN Beta is also built on more recent infrastructure. He uses Arti, the implementation of the new generation rust of the Tor project. This infrastructure is designed to be more secure than the old code based on C which feeds the TOR browser.
The application also includes integrated bridges such as OBFS4 (disguises your traffic as random data) and Snowflake (disguises your video call traffic). These transform traffic into other types of data to bypass censorship.
The application is in beta version, and it could be risky
The TOR VPN application is always experimental, can disclose information and is not entirely ready for high -risk use.
The company warns: “If you face extreme surveillance risks, we recommend that you do not use Tor VPN Beta.”
Currently, it is more a test field, and the application is still clearly to its infancy. We will have to wait and see how the VPN signature of Tor is developing and how it is compared to the main VPN solutions.
