Washington: US President Donald Trump released an additional 25% decree on Wednesday on India’s 25% tariff, saying that the country has directly or indirectly declared Russian oil, adding 25% of the rates already announced.
In an executive decree issued to the White House, the American president said: “I find that the Indian government is currently maturing directly or indirectly the oil of the Russian Federation.
“Consequently, and as the applicable law, the articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States will be subject to an additional rate of additional 25%.”
The American president also declared that he had deemed “necessary and appropriate” to impose an additional Valorem right on imports of articles from India, because it was directly or indirectly imported Russian oil.
Order maintains exemptions for articles targeted by distinct sectoral tasks such as steel and aluminum, and categories that could be affected as pharmaceutical products.
This decision threatens to further complicate American-Indian relations and occurs shortly after a source from the Indian government said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit China for the first time in more than seven years later this month.
The American links of India have faced their most serious crisis for years after interviews with India have not produced a trade agreement.
The move of the White House, reported for the first time by Trump on Monday, follows Trump’s diplomatic envoy, Steve Witkoff in Moscow, aimed at pushing Russia to accept peace in Ukraine.
Trump threatened with higher prices on Russia and secondary sanctions against his allies, if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not move to end the war in Ukraine.
