The United Nations Security Council (CSNU) met to combat growing tensions between Pakistan and India in the aftermath of a deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir (Iiojk), occupied Indians.
The assault of April 22 in Pahalgam, which left 26 dead, has become one of the deadliest incidents in the region in more than two decades.
India, without presenting any evidence, suggested that the attackers had “cross -border links”, an assertion that Pakistan denyed strongly. Islamabad rather called for a neutral and transparent investigation into the incident.
In response to increasing confrontation, Pakistan quickly moved to activate diplomatic channels.
Acting on directives from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ishaq Dar, the Permanent Representative of Pakistan at the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar called for an emergency meeting in CANSC. The session started at 3 p.m. local time at the United Nations in New York.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier in the day, Pakistan intends to inform the Security Council on “aggressive actions of India, repeated provocations and inflammatory rhetoric”, which, according to her, threatens regional and global peace.
The FO has also highlighted the recent decision of India to unilaterally suspend the Indus water Treaty, calling it violation of international obligations.
Pakistan has urged the CSNU to fulfill its mandate to maintain international peace and security by attacking these developments through appropriate measures. The meeting comes in the midst of supported international efforts to prevent a new deterioration between the two nuclear arms neighbors.
