The United States considers “any armed attack” against Qatari territory as a threat to Washington and will provide the Arab State in the Gulf of Security Guarantees, the White House said after an Israeli strike on the country last month.

“In light of continuous threats from the state of Qatar posed by foreign aggression, it is the United States policy to guarantee the security and territorial integrity of the State of Qatar against external attacks,” said an executive decree signed by US President Donald Trump.

In the event of an attack on Qatar, the United States “will take all legitimate and appropriate measures – including diplomatic, economic and, if necessary, military – to defend the interests of the United States and the State of Qatar and to restore peace and stability,” said the order.

The agreement comes after an Israeli strike on the regional ally of the United States on September 9, targeting officials of the Palestinian group Hamas who discussed an American peace proposal for war in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Qatar Prime Minister on the White House on Monday, apologizing for strikes and promising not to do it again, said the United States.

Netanyahu was in Washington to meet Trump and had hitherto provocative since he ordered the September 9 strikes.

Qatar is a key American ally in the Gulf and welcomes the largest American military base in the Al-Uudeid region, which also includes a regional seat for elements of the American central command.
