- Ransomware attacks shed millions while disturbing hospitals, retailers and schools
- Google Drive introduces detection fueled by AI to stop synchronization during attacks
- Microsoft Windows and Office continue to be central targets for threats to current ransomware
Ransomware continues to disrupt industries, with incidents reported in health care, retail, education, manufacturing and the government.
Financial losses can exceed millions of dollars per case, and recovery often takes time that organizations cannot afford.
Now, Google’s leaders have argued that the long -standing approach aimed at relying mainly on antivirus measures is no longer enough to stop these threats.
Microsoft products under control
Google’s announcement says Ransomware remains a persistent threat to Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.
Although native Google workspace files, such as documents and sheets, have not been affected by ransomware, formats like PDF and office documents remain vulnerable.
The company has positioned its new protection tools in response to this continuous risk, as Google Drive for the office now includes artificial intelligence designed to detect the activity of ransomware before being able to damage the data stored in the cloud.
Instead of trying to block each malicious program before activation, the system is looking for suspicious encryption attempts and immediately stops at synchronization.
By cutting synchronization, Google says it can prevent ransomware from spreading in the files of an organization.
Users then receive options to restore their data to a safe condition without relying on external tools.
For administrators, alerts are issued via the administration console, offering visibility on a suspicious activity.
IT teams can examine newspapers, decide to authorize catering and maintain the surveillance of affected accounts.
The system works on Windows and MacOS devices, with detection models for millions of samples.
Google declares that continuous updates of intelligence services on threats like Virustotal help to refine detection and adapt to new attack techniques.
The announcement stresses that ransomware is not only a computer problem but which interrupts basic commercial operations.
Google’s AI AIA is aimed at providing a safety net after intrusion, while traditional methods are focused only on prevention.
In theory, the combination of antivirus defenses with new interventions in terms of clouds could reduce damage, although it remains uncertain in the way these systems will be summed up against increasingly complex attacks.
While Google has its tool as a breakthrough, no technology guarantees complete protection.
Organizations always depend on layers of layers in layers such as the removal of malware, secure authentication and the use of password managers to protect themselves against intrusions.
“By transparently integrating the detection of ransomware fueled by AI and by restoring the capacities in Drive, Google helps organizations in an innovative way to avoid an increasingly common and increasingly dangerous threat while giving end users the possibility of continuing to work,” said Bob O’Donnell, president and chief analyst.
“It’s great not only for Google Workspace users, but also individuals and businesses that can also use other office productivity suites.”
