- The Apple Wallet application has obtained a large update iOS 26 at WWDC 2025
- There are new features for travel, passports to boarding passes
- Virtual car keys also arrive at more vehicles
During its WWDC 2025 event this week, Apple took the time to present new features to come on its Wallet application in iOS 26.
To start, Apple Wallet adds the possibility of storing virtual passports. Apple says that “is not a replacement of a physical passport and cannot be used for international trips and the border passage instead of an American passport”. However, it can be used at different TSA control points “for the verification of identity during domestic trips”. At present, it is unfortunately limited to American passports.
Speaking of travel, Wallet can now provide you with more information on your stored boarding leaves. These include live activities that show the progress of your flight, cards to your terminal and a point of verification of assigned luggage and information on your arrival terminal, your door, your luggage claim area, etc.
Wallet upgrades are not limited to airline trips, as it is now able to display driving licenses and state identifiers for web for age and identity verification. It currently works with services like Chime, Turo, Uber Eats and Us Bank, as well as Arizona MVD, Georgia DDS and Maryland MVA.
Apple intelligence and car keys
Third, Wallet has also been refreshed with Apple Intelligence, which can now be used to identify, summarize and display the command monitoring information in your emails. The iOS 26 update also means that you can pay in several payments or with rewards during store purchases using the Wallet application.
The Wallet application is not used for purchases and travel, however, it can also store virtual car keys that unlock a connected vehicle using your phone. With iOS 26, this happens to more manufacturers, as spotted 9TO5mac.
Currently, virtual car keys are operating with 20 vehicle brands, including Audi, BMW, Hyundai and Volvo. At WWDC 2025, Apple said that 13 additional brands would soon add functionality, with manufacturers like Cadillac, GMC and Porsche on the list (scroll down for the full list). We do not yet know when these marks will add support, but with Apple teasing them as to come, I hope that we will not have long to wait.
This means that Apple’s Wallet application will be much more capable when iOS 26 launches this fall (although you can already try it by downloading the iOS 26 beta developer).
Whether you are traveling or paying something on the move, this could be an excellent option, and with Apple agreeing to allow users to choose different payment applications in the EU, we could also see some of these features compete with rival iOS applications.
