- These five Apple products have spent years without updates
- They include the pro vision, the studio screen, Mac Pro and more
- Here is what the latest rumors say about the future for everyone
Apple has a wide range of products to come in the pipeline and we will see a lot during its major September 9 event, including new iPhones, Apple Watches and AirPods. But there are also many existing products that have the impression of being stuck in limbo, sometimes spending years without updates or attention.
What are these devices and what will Apple do about them? If you patiently await new Max AirPods or a new studio screen, we have gathered the latest speculations on these increasingly dusty models (and three other notable examples) below.
Although it is only speculation – and there is always the potential of an apple surprise – it should help you orient whether to continue to wait for these apparently forgotten products …
1. Airpods Max
As Mark Gurman of Bloomberg and his recent power on the bulletin noted, the AirPods Max headphones have not had significant update in almost five years.
Of course, Apple gave them a USB-C port in September 2024, but it was roughly the only change of note (apart from the wired audio support without loss). Apart from that, they remain as they were at the launch in 2020.
Unfortunately, Gurman does not believe that the AirPods Max will be upgraded so early. In his newsletter, he declares that despite being visibly popular, the headphones are “in a strange place commercially” where they are too popular to interrupt, but apparently not popular enough to update considerably.
As we have argued, this seems strange when an H2 chip (to put them equally with the Airpod Pro 2) could largely suffice alongside certain other minor upgrades. But it seems that the owners of AirPods Max will have to continue to wait for an update, or go to some of the other earphones of better eage instead.
- Verdict: Strangely, an update always seems unlikely in the near future
2. Apple Vision Pro
Apple’s pro vision helmet arrived with a huge amount of brass band in 2023, but it is sure to say that it has never been up to media threw.
A lack of convincing applications, an uncomfortably heavy weight and an astronomical price all slowed down sales and made potential customers think twice before shooting the trigger. Like Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman recently said it in his last power on the newsletter, The Vision Pro may become “a waste of a decade and billions of dollars for Apple”.
There are rumors that Apple works on a updated version with a new chip, with a lighter and cheaper model that follows after that. Unfortunately, there are no rumor dates for both models, so an imminent update seems very improbable. It seems that Apple’s “space computer computer” concept still needs much more time in the oven.
- Verdict: Apple is working on professional vision successors, but do not expect them before 2026 at the earliest
3. IMAC PRO
The iMac Pro was launched in 2017 but was officially interrupted four years later in 2021. However, almost since the day Apple has stopped selling it, there have been rumors that it is intended for a return.
Until now, however, these whispers have not taken anywhere, with the latest important rumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo just before Apple launch the Mac studio in 2022.
Since then, speculation has cooled up, with Mark Gurman de Bloomberg by writing in his power on the newsletter in 2023 that the iMac pro “was on and out of the Apple roadmap”.
Despite this, rumors continued that Apple could work on an iMac with a larger 27 -inch, 30 inch or even 32 inch screen. But with Apple continuing to push the combination of a Mac Mini or a Mac studio with a large external screen, it always seems unlikely in the near future.
- Verdict: Right now, it seems that the Imac Pro will remain in the Apple cemetery
4. Mac pro
The Mac Pro is easily the most expensive Apple computer, but despite this – or because of this – it is not particularly convincing for the moment.
Indeed, his ultra M2 chip is outperformed by several of the other Apple chips, and he missed the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips, which are more recent than all that the Mac Pro offers.
It is said that Apple works on an ultra M4 version of the Mac Pro, and it cannot happen early enough. When you pay more than $ 6,999 / £ 7.199 / $ 11 999 to a computer like this, you should not get obsolete equipment. Fortunately, it seems that it will not be the case much longer.
- Verdict: An ultra M4 version of Mac Pro seems more and more likely for the end of 2025
5. Studio display
The Apple studio display was designed to be a monitor for creatives who did not want to splash on the Pro XDR screen of $ 4,999, and for a while, it did a great job.
However, it has not been affected since March 2022, and it is long in the world of technology. This means that the screen really starts to show its age among a plethora of alternative options.
Fortunately, recent MacRumors speculation suggests that Apple works on a studio 2 screen, and that it could be delivered with a mini-light. This should mean deeper blacks and many local gradation areas for high contrast and brightness.
If you are trying to upgrade soon, the bad news is that this new instructor should not arrive before the beginning of 2026.
- Verdict: A studio screen 2 is still on the cards, but rumors suggest that it will not be launched before the start of 2026
