- Rokid glasses are launching internationally
- They cost $ 599 (around £ 355 £ / 920 in) and launch in November
- These are cheaper, but later arriving than Meta’s smart glasses with a display
We are only a few weeks old from Meta Connect, where we will probably see the company’s first intelligent Ray-Ban glasses with a screen, but a rival beat them in punch with a pair of specifications that seek to go hand in hand with Meta’s offer.
It is because we have just had the international launch event for Rokid glasses, which are now on Kickstarter if you want to mark a pair with a limited discount (ranging from 20 to 15% depending on the time lift offer that you can hang).
At a glance, they share many similarities with the existing intelligent specifications of Meta – we are talking about a 12MP camera, open speakers and a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 chipset. You will also get an AI assistant on board, which is “chatgpt 5 empowered”, if you have an internet connection.
These Rokid glasses take things hired, however, because they also have a pair of microwave wave guide screens which serve a head-up display for the directions, the translation in real time and the promont.
Another characteristic teasing by promotional images is that glasses can – just like Meta’s intelligent specifications – identify the things you can see when requested. However, with the screen, they will also highlight what they have identified. It would be very practical to ensure that there is no confusion between what you wanted to know more and what the glasses inform you.
These screens seem to appear conveniently in your vision – but a little away so as not to be too distracting – although they are not in color. You can only see green text and shapes.
Be that as it may, it certainly seems that Rokid’s specifications could be a real winner if they can be up to the media threw. Especially because – even before any early reduction – they cost $ 599 (around £ 355 £ / 920 in).
This is considerably lower than $ 800 specifications (£ 590 / $ 1,230 to) that meta specifications would cost.
I would not yet count Meta Out, however, as in the running of smart glasses, they have tested history with very elegant (but functional) specifications with its Ray-Ban collaborations and more recently of its Oakley.
In addition, rumors suggest that Meta glasses will go color – although it is only visible for one eye. However, that would make it a more versatile screen.
As for the price difference, when you take into account that the meta specifications are always delivered with a load box (so probably its new model would also do it), it should only be about $ 100 more expensive, because Rokid glasses with a load case will cost you $ 698 (around £ 395 / $ 1,075 at).
It is also likely that Meta’s specifications will arrive earlier, because Connect is in September and technology will generally be launched in the following month. Rokid glasses are not shipped from Kickstarter until November.
Although this launch does not expose a winner or a clear loser between Rokid and Meta, he emphasizes that the Smart Glasses game is not ready to be a race to a horse – certainly not to the extent that VR has felt in recent years.
We will have to wait and see what Meta is doing her debut at Meta Connect, and as always, we will have to test the two glasses before publishing our final verdict – but Rokid’s specifications are impressive, and if she can stick landing, Meta (and anyone who seeks to buy a pair of smart specifications) will want to pay attention.
