- Thinkware U3000 Pro enables coverage of up to three channels
- It contains front (4K) and rear (2K) Sony Starvis 2 HDR cameras.
- Connected service support allows live viewing in leisure time via app
Thinkware has unveiled its latest dash cam, which builds on the popular existing U3000 with improved hardware and Connected Service support that allows drivers to monitor their vehicles remotely.
The new ‘Pro’ version remains equipped with a 4K UHD front-facing camera and a 2K QHD rear-facing unit, both powered by Sony Starvis 2 sensors (IMX678 and IMX675) for excellent quality images in poor visibility and low light situations.
Thinkware’s radar event detection system has been improved so that its range now exceeds that of its predecessor. The technology essentially monitors vehicles at all times and acts like sensors and radars on modern cars to offer advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as forward collision warning and notifications when the vehicle in front of you moves away.
The U3000 Pro also integrates Wi-Fi and GPS for precise location recording in the event of an incident, with revised smart parking modes that include high temperature protections and battery saving features, meaning the device can go into low power mode if it gets too hot – rather than turning off.
However, the camera must be hardwired into a vehicle to get the most functionality from a parked car. There is also a separate LTE Wi-Fi router bundle that must be purchased separately to use all of the dash cam’s connected features.
The company says that for fleet users, taxi drivers and professionals, the U3000 Pro also supports an optional infrared camera, enabling three-channel coverage for maximum driver and passenger protection.
Opportunity for improvement
Enhanced Connected Service support – which allows remote vehicle monitoring via a smartphone app – offers real-time live viewing, impact alerts, vehicle tracking, driving history analysis and emergency notifications.
At $429.99 / £399 for the single-channel U3000 Pro (around AU$800) and $549.99 / £479 for the dual-channel U3000 Pro (around $960), Thinkware says the latest version will become one of its “best-selling dash cams this Christmas”, due to the fact that it offers expanded radar coverage and improved connected features without increasing the price.
That said, the outgoing U3000 model is discounted on Thinkware’s website, while still offering plenty of features and the excellent twin cameras.
