Are you looking for an air purifier that doesn’t look clinical and won’t break the bank? Head to IKEA. The Swedish housewares titan has a compact $50 purifier that looks like a small Scandinavian suitcase, and I can see it fitting into just about any place.
There are many compact purifiers on the market, but I have never seen one like this. The IKEA UPPÅTVIND has a simple, square design that can stand upright or lay on its side, and a dove gray carrying handle so it can be easily transported from room to room depending on where it’s needed. Despite the white color, it doesn’t look clinical at all – it almost looks like a speaker.
The functionality also seems very solid. There is an EPA12 filter that can remove 99.5% of small airborne particles, including PM2.5 (small inhalable particles measuring 0.1 to 2.5 micrometers), pollen and dust. An LED indicator will let you know when it’s time to change the filter – approximately every six months – and replacements are available from IKEA. There are three fan speeds to choose from, depending on the noise level and purification efficiency you need.
IKEA recommends UPPÅTVIND for rooms 75 square feet. This is based on five complete air changes per hour, which is on the high end of what is generally recommended – you could certainly use it in a larger room and have a slightly less effective purification rate. The CADR (clean air flow) is 18 cubic feet/min at the lowest setting and 55 cubic feet/min at the highest setting.
It’s not the most advanced model on the market: Most of today’s best air purifiers offer an automatic mode in which the device turns itself on and off, adjusts the fan speed based on the pollutants it detects, and also provides particle data so you better understand your air quality. However, if you prefer to keep things simple, this seems like a very solid choice. And for its ultra affordable price, you also benefit from excellent value for money.
