- Thunderbolt 5 brings external GPUs closer to the delivery of real office class performance on fine laptops
- Gigabyte Aorus RTX 5090 AI Box is a dream for power users, not occasional players
- Heat and power delivery is major concerns when executing high -level GPUs such as RTX 5090
At Computex 2025, Gigabyte introduced a new external GPU speaker designed to offer high performance games and AI capabilities.
The Aorus RTX 5090 AI box connects via Thunderbolt 5 and is powered by the NVIDIA RTX 5090 lighthouse, according to the traces of previous models such as the Aorus GTX 1070 and Aorus RTX 3080 Ti, which also presented the high -level GPUS NVIDIA.
With the RTX 5090 widely considered the best GPU on the market, the AI box promises office class performance for machines that previously maximized with integrated graphics or modest discreet GPUs.
Thunderbolt 5 unlocks a new performance potential
Thanks to the considerably increased bandwidth of Thunderbolt 5, many bottlenecks that have once afflicted EGPU configurations are treated, bringing users closer to the long -standing lens to manage a high -end GPU on a light and ultraportable machine.
Theoretically, the Aorus RTX 5090 AI box checks almost all the boxes: advanced graphics, connectivity to the test of future and flexibility of Plug-And-Play. However, EGPU configurations are always delivered with inherent limitations.
Despite lower latency and higher flow, external GPUs are often not able to match the performance of internal GPUs due to the general data transfer costs and the driver’s potential inconsistencies.
Heat management and food also remains critical concerns, in particular with a GPU as swallowed as RTX 5090.
There is also the question of practical aspect. This configuration will probably be exaggerated for occasional games or office tasks, but it will be a convincing option for developers, video editors and 3D artists who need the fastest PC performance with the flexibility of a mobile configuration.
That said, prices will be a key consideration. Gigabyte has not yet announced the price of the AI box, but with the RTX 5090 already commanding a bonus, and Thunderbolt 5 components adding to the cost, this device will not be cheap.
For reference, the Gigabyte Aorus GV-N4090IXB-24GD, launched two years ago, made its debut at $ 2,000. The new model could very well exceed this figure.
