Spooky season is in full swing, and while we have plenty of scary movie recommendations for you, some of you may be looking for a longer narrative to pass the nights until Halloween arrives and if that’s the case, then Marianne on Netflix might be just the kind of terrifying TV you’re looking for.
Between Hill House, Midnight mass, Stranger Things, Cabinet of Curiosities and more, Netflix is one of the best streaming services for fans who prefer their scares slowly served over a number of episodes rather than the short, brutal shock of a horror film, and while some of the above may garner all the buzz, Marianne has been a quiet hit with horror aficionados since its debut in 2019 and, for many, ranks among the best Netflix shows.
And it’s not just scare junkies who love the series, with critics giving it a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Intrigued? Check out the trailer below.
Marianne comes from Spider director Samuel Bodin, and those who have seen his scary 2023 effort may have an idea of what to expect – when Marianne it’s scary, it becomes very scary.
The series follows Emma (Victoire Du Bois), the author of a series of bestselling novels revolving around a witch named Marianne. When Emma announces that the series is coming to an end, an encounter with a childhood friend sends her on a journey back, confronting the childhood nightmares that inspired the books, as the line between fiction and reality begins to blur.
Bodin’s series delivers all the thrills and gruesome visuals that any horror fan could ask for, while creating a rich and intriguing mythology that will have you bingeing late into the night – even if you won’t be able to sleep anyway.
And if you’re hesitant to start a series that has since been canceled, let me reassure you: while it would have been great to delve more into the show’s history, the solitary season works perfectly as a standalone series, there’s no risk of unresolved cliffhangers here.
What do critics think of Marianne?
As you’d expect from a series with a Rotten Tomatoes-perfect score, critics have nothing but praise for Mariannewith Polygon calling it a “perfect recommendation for any horror fan” while praising the “viscerally disturbing visuals edited with stunning precision.”
Faltering mythmeanwhile, applauded the show’s “terrific performances and damn scares,” while Bloody disgusting simply called it “nightmares personified.”
A number of critics have also made comparisons to the work of Stephen King, including the horror master himself who posted on X/Twitter: “(Maianne) has (I say this with all modesty) a Stephen King vibe.
If you’re one of those sick people – like me – who likes to be scared, MARIANNE (Netflix) will do the trick. There are hints of humor that give it a STRANGER THINGS vibe. There is also (I say this with all modesty) a Stephen King atmosphere.September 26, 2019
