As a PK Press Club phones editor, my office is flooded with accessories of all kinds of cases. I have colorful Catetify cases, nomad leather cases and sustainable MOFT cases. I have Magsafe portfolios, portable chargers and at least one accessory for each phone for our best telephone guide. But until recently, I would never have received a telephone case in human skin.
Okay, the sky named appropriately is not In fact Made from human skin (it would be a bit as Se7en), but it is East Dressed in a synthetic material designed to watch, feel and react to elements like our birthday combinations – which, frankly, are just as gross as the real thing.
This product is an original idea of the British mobile network O2, researcher Marc Teyssier, and the British Skin Foundation, who have united their forces to raise awareness of excessive sun exposure as temperatures skyrocketed in the regions affected by summer around the world.
Essentially, the cape burns when exposed to UV rays, reflecting the harmful effects of the sun on our body. To do the trick, Teyssier combined 3D printing techniques with a flexible filament and silicone, and the surface is pigmented with specialized composites that react to UV light. This combination creates a realistic simulation of the sun exposure, which makes the effects of ultraviolet radiation surprisingly obvious. Check it in the video below:
O2 says that the CAPE was created to highlight the significant disconnection between consciousness and behavior in terms of sun protection. The network notes that more than half (56%) of the British check their phones three times or more during the hours of crest of the sun (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), but only one in five sunscreen (20%) with the same frequency. More alarming, almost one in 10 (9%) does not wear sunscreen at all during these crucial hours when UV levels are the strongest. I suspect that the figures are also overwhelming for American citizens.
To be clear: you cannot really buy the cape. It is a limited limit product which is intended to be a conversation starter – a visceral reminder that we must make as many comments from our skin as we make our phones – rather than something that you can buy and use.
