I would lie if I said that I did not want for centuries that Valve opened Steamos on other PCs and hand machines beyond its excellent steam bridge. And after a few expectations, it finally seems to occur with the recent overview of Steamos 3.7.0 with the “start of support for non-standard pocket computers”.
Now, this is not a large quantity to get rid of since it is only for a version of Steamos overview. But with a model of the Lenovo Legion Go S. Be fueled by Steamos and to arrive in May, we could see the advent of a new range of portable PCs based on Steamos.
There are already ways to execute steamos on non -cut bridge machines, but care is not official and they do not have the integration of smooth steam in the same vein as the steam bridge. The best portable PCs tend to execute Windows 11 with a form of portable interface above the operating system, then press the Steam overall mode to activate a portable game experience of the console type.
Having a native steamos support would surely make everything smooth for new ordinary PCs and those that could be modernized or double boot with the valve operating system. In our practical time with the Lenovo Legion Go S, we were certainly sold on the idea of the Steamos version.
Hot dreams
Although I always want Microsoft to work on Windows 11 refining to operate more easily on laptops, especially if it makes a form of Xbox laptop, I think Steamos is more up to the task of taking care of the portable PC game, in particular since it was three years old.
What excites me more is that by deleting the use of Windows 11, the ASUS, Lenovo and MSI laptops could draw from an operating system which requires fewer air resources and can thus unlock chips more energy on laptops.
The AMD Zen 2 and the APU based on the steam of the steam and Rdna 2 are not as powerful as the other chips in other pocket computers, such as the Asus Rog Ally X which has an AMD Ryzen Z1 extreme processor and graphics based on Rdna 3. But the steam game undoubted software and tandem hardware.
Let Steamos take care of the operating system and the interface could be the best of the two worlds, with, for example, a new generation ROG ally sporting a powerful APU with a silicon power which can be easily accessible thanks to a smaller need for proximity calculation resources.
All this could open a new avenue for laptops which could finally challenge the steam bridge, at least in my eyes.
The only warning would be access to third -party game services. Steamos and the Steam bridge were built around users who have exploited the wide range of games supported on the Steam store, rather than allowing easy access to Xbox Game Pass or EPIC game launcher.
However, there are already bypass to obtain Xbox Cloud games on the Steam bridge; Valve does not seem to discourage this. So I would not be surprised to see hardware manufacturers work to rely on Steamos to integrate other launchers in a clean and easy to use.
It is difficult to say when we could see more pocket computers based on Steamos. But since we have just received the latest overview of Steamos, it should not be long before a full version is left out in nature; It could happen in April.
If this happens, we could see a bunch of laptops that avoid Windows 11 for Steamos on this side 2025; I cross my fingers.
